SEIFSA’S WOMEN OF STEEL CONFERENCE CELEBRATES STRONG FEMALE LEADERS

On 21 August 2025, SEIFSA hosted its Women of Steel Conference at Komatsu Africa Holdings Training Centre, Germiston. Themed Ignite. Forge. Lead, the event celebrated strong women shaping the metals and engineering industry. 

Key Highlights 

  • Pam du Plessis (Invincible Valves) shared her journey of breaking into a male-dominated space by educating herself, learning her trade, and leading with emotional intelligence. 
  • Homera Kadwa (Thuthukisa Advisory & Consulting) stressed that education is a lifelong journey and urged women to stay “teachable and coachable.” 
  • Dr Jessica Hutchings (Rand Mutual Assurance) explained how education and her PhD opened doors and earned her greater respect in the industry. 
  • Sylvester Makamu (ACTOM), the only male speaker, positioned himself as an ally for women, sharing his passion for empowerment and honouring his late mother. 
  • Colleen Commons (BSI Steel) encouraged confidence through knowledge and the importance of truly listening. 
  • Natalie Van Vreden (PCASA) spoke about resilience, humility, and rebuilding trust after a challenging start as the only female CEO in her sector. 

In support of the Menstruation Foundation, attendees donated 327 packs of sanitary towels to help eliminate period poverty in South Africa.
