SEIFSA’s Decarbonisation Conference Paves the Way for a Greener Future

SEIFSA successfully hosted The Decarbonisation Efforts in the Steel Value Chain Conference on 11 October  2023. This event brought together key stakeholders, policy shapers and participants from across South Africa’s steelmaking value chain to address the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

 The conference aimed to highlight the significant role the steel industry plays in South Africa’s economy and the critical need for sustainable practices to achieve the country’s climate goals. SEIFSA CEO Lucio Trentini emphasised the importance of the event, stating, “SEIFSA’s hope is that the conference will provide a forum where key stakeholders can discuss and understand the opportunities for change, so we can work towards a greener tomorrow where businesses, communities, and our planet all thrive.”

 The conference featured a lineup of esteemed speakers who shared their insights and experiences on decarbonisation and sustainable development. Danish Ambassador to South Africa, Elsebeth Søndergaard Krone, delivered the keynote address, offering a valuable perspectives on Denmark’s successful efforts in reducing GHG emissions and meeting EU emission targets.

 Dr Crispian Olver, Executive Director of the Presidential Climate Commission, spoke about South Africa’s climate transition targets and the essential role of industry in sustainable development.

The conference also included presentations from Frederick Bo Rosenquist of the Confederation of Danish Industries and Jerry Dungu, Head of Market & Product Development at Arcelor Mittal South Africa. Discussions covered Denmark’s Climate-Fit Manufacturing Programme, opportunities for accelerating decarbonisation in the steel sector and ArcelorMittal’s roadmap to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

 A highlight of the event was a panel discussion moderated by SEIFSA’s Chief Operating Officer, Tafadzwa Chibanguza, which explored the guiding influences and opportunities to effect change among key stakeholders. Panellists included representatives from SMS Group, ArcelorMittal, Grundfos, TIPS and the Confederation of Danish Industries.

 The conference concluded with reflections on the day’s discussions, key takeaways, and next steps for advancing decarbonisation efforts in the steel value chain. SEIFSA remains committed to fostering a sustainable future for South Africa’s steel industry and will continue to engage with stakeholders to drive meaningful change.
